Because on Saturday, we were recognized by the American Board of Neuroscience Nurses as someone who demonstrates expertise in stroke care. She made something of herself, through it all. She’s saved lives and made others’ lives better for being in it. I wish I could go back and tell her. Great job,

So, when I was a senior in high school, I took a guitar class just so I could learn how to play “Right Here Waiting” for my then boyfriend of over 2 years who was one of the first infantry divisions to be deployed to Iraq after 911.

Just do it. Because if we didn’t, you all would have said your last goodbyes to us by this time next week. The 5 minutes is worth it.

I promise.

Go take 5 minutes and check your detectors. Seriously. Take 5 minutes and test them. Make sure you know what the alarm sounds like, so if you ever have to hear it, you won’t convince yourself that it isn’t a big deal and try to go back to sleep.

Neither of us went to bed thinking that I’d never see my 30th birthday, or that Steve wouldn’t live to see 32. We just got married in August. I'm due to graduate in May with my Bachelor's in Nursing. Our lives were almost taken before we could even live them.

A few hours later, I was standing outside my home as a firefighter walked out, looked me in the eyes, & told me that our furnace was kicking out carbon monoxide, and that our detector saved our lives. Neither Steve nor I went to bed with the slightest thought that we’d fall asleep and never wake up.

Thankfully, my husband, who I can have 15 minute conversations with while he’s sleep talking, who doesn’t wake up for anything, did wake up and had his wits together enough to go check out what it was that was disturbing his sleep.
