There are surely a whole lot of ‘sets of 7 teams’ in the NHL that haven’t won in 30+ years. The fact that this set all happens to be located above the 49 seems… meaningless? Other than the competitive spirit and cultural je ne sais quois that makes everyone think Canadian teams should be dominating.

Sure, you get a generational Canadian talent captaining a Canadian team once in a while, but the most successful Canadians often lead American teams to cups - see, for example, Crosby, Toews, etc. Canada wins most of the tournaments where they get to leverage their Canadianness.

For some it may have been about the *perception* of the economy. Trump told people they were worse off than they would have been under him and they believed him, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary. In a sense that could be about ‘trust’ in institutions. Mostly it’s a lack of shared truth.
