My gran used to have a book holder like the one pictured for just such eventualities. i inherited it but unfortunately it's too warped to use. it still doesn't turn the pages for you though...

Another momentous occasion: the first time my local Waterstones has stocked one of my translations. Probably the first time one has been sold in Cardiff sadly.

Great review of Dengue Boy in the @financialtimes.com but a bit miffed as to why they don’t mention me at all, especially when they mention fellow SP-EN translator Sarah Moses in the review directly below it? #namethetranslator

In happier news, my translation of Michel Nieva's Dengue Boy is out today in the US (20th Feb in the UK). This reader found it too disgusting to finish and yet still gave it 5 stars! High praise indeed!

Just snuck in a cheeky Conrad to get my total number of books read this year to 71. Neither good nor bad, about average for me - unlikely to ever reach the giddy heights of 2021 again. What a way to end it tho- I understood about 60% of it, but what incredible writing and world-building

Did a full read through in 2023 (except for the stories) and he’s just so sensational. ‘The country funeral’ is as pitch perfect as (long) short stories gets. He’s also amazing at writing about drinking - the good side and the bad side.

Found this observation really interesting. I totally agree with it, however my draft leant much more into the verbatim, colloquial style of the original. I made a sort of hybrid cockney-welsh-Hibernian-American English which ultimately (and probably rightly) my great editors at Fitzcarraldo…

My next translation (Dengue Boy by Michel Nieva, coming feb 25) is getting some, let’s say, wildly diverging reviews on NetGalley!
