Does anyone have any insights as to why labiodental trills are *not* greyed out in the IPA chart? Henton brings it up as an example of an impossible sound in a 1987 discussion paper that precedes the Greyboi™, but as far as I can tell it's never been greyed out.

Sightseeing in Barcelona, found the hottest museum in town! I love this so much

Additionally, you can now control the range of the y-axis when plotting waveforms, fx to ensure that multiple channels share the same range for easier comparison. (Thanks to @susfuchs.bsky.social for suggesting this!)

... and the signal processing can be controlled relatively freely, including the option to choose window shape and size, and to estimate spectra using either FFT or the multitaper method

.... and generally, the appearance of the plots can be controlled pretty freely, including options for highlighting parts of the plot ...

The axes of these plots can be flexibly controlled...

💥praatpicture 1.6.2 now on CRAN 💥
The main new feature is that there's now a function to draw spectral slices
August 25, 2025 at 3:17 PM
Plotting your spectral slices in R will soon be a lot easier!

Another minor change is that you can now control how many digits to print along the y-axis of waveforms (or suppress it entirely), and the center no longer says 0.000 but just 0 which is a lot nicer!

In sunny news, praatpicture version 1.5.0 is now on CRAN 🌞🧨 and you can now finally overlay pitch and intensity on the waveform (thanks to @jannelorenzen.bsky.social for suggesting this)
July 11, 2025 at 1:36 PM
estimate and track formants, get intensity, get HNR, get spectral information, spit out file information, read TextGrids, and combine TextGrid and signal information
May 23, 2025 at 4:04 PM
What you can do for now is read in sound files (more or less file-type-agnostically), track pitch, ...

Very exciting news for PraatSauce users! We've just pushed a new version which fully rewrites the code base, making things faster and simpler to use.
Instead of settings parameters in a bunch of Praat windows, you now set them in a spreadsheet file that looks like this

Way ahead of you! Went on a long walk in the park, saw fresh ducklings and goslings!

praatpicture v1.4.2 is now on CRAN 🍾 meaning that these highlighting options are now available at an R package store near you (and in the Shiny app!). No other major updates this time!

Had a couple of real oldies in my most recent paper, particularly proud of the 1678 citation!

Got carried away, more highlighting options coming soon to an R package store near you!

There are also signal-specific arguments for making just the pitch, or formant contour, or whatever stand out. This is also implemented in the Shiny app. Have fun plotting! (3/3)

The main new thing is the 'highlight' argument for making portions of signals stand out with a different color, point size, or similar. This can be done by specifying exact times or by matching labels in a TextGrid (2/3)

💣 praatpicture version 1.4.0 on CRAN! 💣 (1/3)

Try it out! Let me know if anything doesn't work! Enjoy some nice REAPER-predicted glottal closure instants!

there's quite a lot of formant customization options in the praatpicture R library, I'm also very happy to take suggestions if I'm missing a use case!
