Yes, thanks. Also, I’ve heard that Annie Jacobsen’s book “Nuclear War: A Scenario” is also being made into a movie. I guess doomsday is kind of in the air right now?

Or just some dip switch settings that control the logic of lights. Do you want them to turn off immediately when the car is turned off versus dimming a bit (to show the state) and then turning off after X minutes versus just run them until low voltage. It seems like something that could be done, eh?

I was going to make a joke about there should be a Grammy for best audio book - but holy cow that’s a real thing.

I wrote this as a comment to the video, but you really shouldn’t read video comments :-) — I really enjoy your work. The way you combine humor with a methodical construction of an explanation is great and never fails to educate me (okay, maybe a low bar considering my science education).

Hmmm, time to reset that silo

That one certainly won me over, the measured pace, the collection of details, the fun little moments and then the reveal. Really, really good work. Her other videos have been equally informative and entertaining. I’m sure she has other stuff to do, so I’m thankful she’s sharing this with all of us

I’ve started to watch her videos after YouTube recommended the Dyson Sphere episode. She seems super smart and is a good story teller, so I should follow your lead - even if I’m not watching any of the modern trek (I’m old enough to have watched re-runs of the original show on broadcast television)

As for the TV screen obstruction - I’ve taken the simple solution of buying a sound bar wide, deep and tall enough for me to put the tv + stand on top. Then I put HomePod minis in front of the sound bar (but under the screen). I don’t use the sound bar at all.

As far as the speaker phone phenomenon, maybe it comes from reality tv? I seem to recall seeing speaker phone usage on a lot of those shows, perhaps to capture the audio? Maybe people saw that and started to mimic the practice?

Neat, reminds me of a book I found (can’t remember where) written in 1982 with instructions on how to produce typewriter art. It includes BASIC code designed to do this on a computer and printer. Bob Neil is British, I guess

I’ve heard camera rental places can tell right away if you’ve taken gear there

Did you see the video where someone teaches a bird a song that had a spectrogram image of a bird in it?

Usenet! I know it wasn’t perfect even back in the day, but it was the original text-based, non-corporate, federated social media.

In my area during that time there were meetups of BBS users and sysops where folks would get together and talk about tech and stuff. A few of them moved on to starting a local ISP (back when that was a thing). I know the past wasn’t perfect, but things were nicer before all the big tech money boys.

Oh gosh, there is a fourth?! Thanks, I didn’t know

I enjoyed it, the discussion about how we know what truth is reminds me a little bit of Adam Savage’s talk about the problem of precision in measurement. You don’t need nanometer scale precision to make a birdhouse, but how do you make that nanometer ruler when you do need it?

Nice! Is that an archway, or a perspective thing? Either way, very cool. Sorry you had to go through that, but now you have that home ownership skill level up. :-)
