A web page essay on ‘What Motivates Doug Engelbart’ starting with a long quote from Engelbart’s 1962 ‘Augmenting Human Intellect’ report. By "augmenting human intellect" we mean increasing the capability of a man to approach a complex problem situation, to gain comprehension to suit his particular needs, and to derive solutions to problems. Increased capability in this respect is taken to mean a mixture of the following: more-rapid comprehension, better comprehension, the possibility of gaining a useful degree of comprehension in a situation that previously was too complex, speedier solutions, better solutions, and the possibility of finding solutions to problems that before seemed insoluble. And by "complex situations" we include the professional problems of diplomats, executives, social scientists, life scientists, physical scientists, attorneys, designers--whether the problem situation exists for twenty minutes or twenty years. We do not speak of isolated clever tricks that help in particular situations. Yes! In Jan 1969, Andy van Dam thought it would be clever to write the first press release about the new ‘Hypertext Editing System’ on HES itself. We did so.

Two days later, the UPI wire published this. It was picked up by The NY Times and over 200 news organizations in the US and Europe.
A 'Flawless' Computer Makes News: An Error PROVIDENCE, R.I., Jan. 5 (UPI)-The news release appeared on a long sheet of paper with holes punched down the left side the kind that comes out of a computer. The first paragraph said. "A Brown University professor and his associates have developed a computer process which turns out flawless final copy hundreds of times faster than any conventional method of editorial production." The second paragraph gave the new process the name of the "Hypertext Editing System" and a footnote said the release itself had been prepared by the system. The third paragraph said the new process did away with such things as pencils, ink and pastepost. The flawless computer apparently meant pastepots. The New Work Times Published: January 6, 1969

I believe Tim Berners-Lee's original HTTP and HTML protocols succeeded beyond his original vision of a globally scalable, loosely coupled network of Web pages that anyone could edit. The fact that his original protocols were simple, decentralized, and free for anyone to use were essential to success in a world of competing proprietary Internet publishing and commerce "standards" from Microsoft and others. But in my opinion, the Web won by turning permanence and stability into a decentralized economic decision. Berners-Lee's original W3C protocols appeared at the right time to open clear field opportunities for distributed publishing, marketing, sales and advertising that fueled the Web's growth and evolution. Making the 3D arrangement of stacks persistent turns it into a memory palace — or a virtual model of the contents of a perfectly memorized messy office.
