These days, I am so tired of the people who are tired of everything being so political these days
For #SewAndTell Week #11, Scraps is the name of the game. Here's my one and only attempt at a representational art quilt, made entirely of leftover batik strips. The recipient was quite happy with how it turned out, but somehow (?!) this process photo is the only one I have.

My kids know that a hand-made Halloween is my love language. Sometimes I worry they're just humoring me, but year after year, they trust me to help them execute their dream costumes just as they envision them - and they seem to think I can do anything. I live for these yearly creative collabs!

Today in Spanish 101 my Fisher Price phone rang, as it often does when we're studying possessive adjectives, and it was the cops who were looking for 2 of my students, 1 of whom calmly informed me "acabamos de robar el museo Louvre", so mystery solved, I guess! #highered #spanishteacher

"I think I'm burning out on teaching," she says, as she packs the Spanish tortilla she cooked for her students into the car 10 minutes early so she can swing by one campus on the way to another to retrieve the card game and virtual tapas excursion she invented for them #highered #spanishteacher

#SewAndTell Week 9 is all about purple, which I am typically *not* all about. But my sewing protégée is, and some of her square-in-square axolotl blocks definitely fit the bill! #sewsky #quiltsky #sewing

#sewandtell Week 8: UFO's. As terrifying as an unfinished project can be, the scariest one is usually the one I haven't even started yet. The moment I cut into this treasured Liberty fabric, it will become *something*, so it'll lose the potential to be *anything*. Chilling, right?

I booked a photo session tonight bc I have very few pictures of my family together, but while I’m smiling & holding my children, I know I will hear this mother’s screams.

I don’t want my tax dollars supporting ICE agents dragging parents away from car line. And most moms in the US agree with me.

If you're not Antifa, does that mean you're Profa? Just Fa? Fa-curious?

Antifa is not an organization.
• There are no “founders” of Antifa.
• There is no centralized leadership of Antifa.
• There is no Antifa “membership.”
• There are no “chapters” of Antifa.
• You cannot “join” Antifa.
• Antifa is a PHILOSOPHY - the idea that fascism is bad and should be resisted.

#sewandtell Week 7 - Scary
[Ominous movie trailer voice]: This sewist thought she could freehand a witch hat without using a pattern. [Screechy violins] But she. Thought. WRONG.

I mean, it's done. But if I were to make another, I'd splurge on a pattern to get the brim dimensions right. #sewsky

For #SewAndTell 's Cozy Week 5, I give you the pants that I reverse engineered from my favorite pajama bottoms, then sewed last night out of a SwissAir blanket I scored at the thrift store. Are they janky AF? Yes. Will I wear them to tatters, just like their predecessors? Also yes. #sewsky

For week 4 of #SewAndTell, here's a favorite make - faved bc it's one of few things I've made that still lives with me, I made a lot of memories while hand-piecing it, I tried so many new things in the process, and I adore the colorways of these batiks against the earthy linen. #quiltsky #sewsky

Not to interrupt production at the takes factory but they should probably identify and catch the actual killer before we decide what it all means.

I knew I had the flavor of children who never tell me anything that happens at school, but last night they casually revealed that one day last year their gym teacher battled a goose who had camped out on the swingset, then returned to class bleeding and covered in feathers. I'm sorry, WHAT?

Not my work, but for week 3 of #SewAndTell, here's a closeup of a #patchwork quilt I inherited and I'm trying to revive. She's so delicate! It's hard to cut her up, but even repairing her seems impractical as the parts that aren't outright damaged seem so vulnerable. Ideas?

I hate how students just feel free to use whatever honorific pops out rather than "Profe", as I request and model. It already sucks we live in a society that assigns women titles by marital status/age; the least you can do is abide by the title I told you was accurate, professional and comfortable.

Readerly Pet Peeve #79: a first-person narrator talking about their own involuntary body language feels sloppy to me. No way are you both extremely confused and also aware that you're shaking your head in confusion. Scowling isn't a conscious decision when you're angry (plus, you can't see it).

Me to mammogram tech: hoolally, if ever there was a good argument for more women in STEM, it's that this is the best tech we've come up with for this task, am I right, gals?!

Mammogram tech: well, this is just how it's done

Me: please just let me make my dumb little societal observation, I'm sore

Pre-frontal cortex: if you click this little box 1st, you can go 30 whole days without having to type in a randomized 6-digit code.

Amygdala: but if I don't click THIS 6-digit code IMMEDIATELY, then I'm going to have to type the NEXT 6-digit code.

Pre-frontal cortex: sure, but-

Amygdala: [click]

My best friend tells a story about how one day while she was just minding her business, her then 3yo daughter walks up to her and, a propos of nothing, goes "I wasn't eating butter" and come to find out had just housed a whole stick of it. Anyway,
Rudy Giuliani suffered severe injuries in a car accident last night, according to his spokesperson

Now and again when I take my kids to the library children's room, a book sticks to me instead. This one has a premise I'd never encountered before: a 12-year-old daughter and her mother escape a cult and begin to rebuild their future. I enjoyed this at Because of Winn-Dixie levels.

Can you imagine having a soul crushing day - get fired, lose someone you love, cancer diagnosis, idk - and have to walk through a Dr Pepper machine AND a disco room to sob face down on your bed

One of my husband's most endearing qualities is how he talks to suburban critters - birds, squirrels, bunnies, pets - as if he's just bumped into an old friend. I so hope all the neighbors have clocked this about him: "Ope, there goes Andrew, chatting with his bunnies again"
