Automattic’s unlimited book budget says a lot about our culture. This post reflects on three remarkable books that reshaped how I think, work, and design.

I don't know if you can tell, but fall is my favourite season. 😉 This one is from 2023, close to Philly, when I was visiting friends. It's another one from my Instagram. The weather has finally cooled down around here. The amazing colours are everywhere. The best time of the year (I would say the same about christmas and then spring). Cool, sunny days are the best.

Can you imagine working on a company where e-mail is not a thing? Weird, eh? I thought so too in the beginning. The truth is, using emails to communicate helps the creation of silos and is the recipe for information to get lost. Think about it. Decision-making, thought process, nuances, everything that is discussed in an email is lost if the people involved leave the company.

Last week I joined the 9th edition of the Automattic 5K relay. We do that twice a year. As a 100% distributed company we don't get to be together a lot. So we find ways to connect. I talked more about this here. So, twice a year we run. Separately but together. During the 24 hours of a day we have at least one, but usually multiple, Automatticians running somewhere around the world.

I have been home for about 3 weeks now and it's been nice. Am I already planning my next trip? MAYBE. But let's not talk about it now. While I love travelling, it's always good to be back home. I have established my routine again, joined a gym, kept up with my workout and running habits, back hiking and, the best part, back to my own kitchen and able to try new recipes.

The Source of Truth is in the works, but it will take a few more weeks to be published, as only when Release candidate 2 comes out I can be sure about what actually made it into the release.

One of the most valuable tools I've worked with in recent years isn't flashy, it's not "AI-driven" and it doesn't even try to solve all problems at once. It's simply asynchronous communication. At Automattic, we use P2 as the heart of that async culture. It is a long-form text-based tool, integrated with several other internal tools, P2 is where ideas live, where discussions grow, and where decisions are documented instead of disappearing into chat history.

I've been away from home for almost 4 months straight (with a small stop in Canada to repack for a couple of days in July). I left Noway yesterday (and a piece of my heart stayed behind like every time) and I'm now in Basel, Switzerland, for today. There's a thunderstorm forming here, so I don't think I'll go anywhere after work. I'm ready to go back home and get back to my routine.

One of the best things about Europe is how close everything is. I feel like in Canada, I could drive for 3 days before getting to the next city. Here, everything is close. So, after our meetup in Strasbourg, I had a few days to travel around before I headed to Norway because my sister was still in Brazil. So, Damianne and I decided to go on a short trip to Colmar, Basel, and Vaduz.

Being part of a fully distributed, remote-first, remote-last, remote-all-the-way-to-the-core, remote-always company is an amazing thing. Specially when we are going through a wave of RTO (return to office) mandates lately. I thought the world would be different, more ready for the remote world after 2 years of statistics showing things get better when you let employees work from home. But nope.

I love this theme. I have taken a lot of reflections pics in my life. My university graduation project was in photography. You had to pick two themes, one for B&W and one for colour and my colour theme was reflections. So, for a long time I was looking for reflections everywhere XD I still take a lot of reflections pics.
