I didn’t write a story for this one, but I wanted to share the letter I wrote to ARC readers here. I hope you feel seen by this book and I hope you are inspired to be brave in whatever form that takes both at the gaming table and in life.

Are there traps along the corridor? Does the dragon hear your approach? Roll stealth. There at the end of the hall is a creature, restrained with metal chains. Its scales glint jewel tones, reflecting the light you carry in your hand. Will you slay it or save it? Not every question can be decided by a dice roll. I wish it was that easy. Decisions like when to trust, how to love, and who we are can’t be outsourced to a D20. We don’t get skill modifiers in real life, and we definitely don’t get fireball, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still find a way to access magic. I have found magic—again and again—while playing make-believe with my friends. Games like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Fabula Ultima, Grimwild, and Thirsty Sword Lesbians have all allowed me to do more than fight fiends and befriend beholders. They have allowed me to be myself in ways I never thought possible. I’m not actually a little kobold paladin who had the misfortune to lick a cursed gem, or a teenage space pirate bossing around her crew of found family. But before I was able to be loud and proud in real life, I got to experiment with my identity in a fantasy world surrounded by friends. Before I was out as agender, I was a non-binary Harengon barbarian (or a non-bunary barbhareian, if you will). Before I was out as a lesbian, I was sapphic Tiefling. Before I felt brave enough to be myself in the real world, gaming allowed me to be myself in another. I could figure out how to navigate my identity at my own pace, in my own way. white text on a purple background reads: Finding oneself through tabletop gaming is not my unique experience. Queer people everywhere gain the courage to be themselves through this magical, mystical storytelling game. Some try on an identity to see if it fits. Some stumble into self-discovery as they grow more comfortable with the game and their fellow players. Still others observe, watching or listening to actual play shows where they see trans people grow into their authentic selves episode by episode and gain the confidence to chase what they want. That is magic. It’s representation, it’s experimentation, it’s imagination! The pages of This is How We Roll are full of stories about queer love, friendship, discovery, and joy through gaming. First love is found (and second love, too), genders are declared, and parties are formed and dissolved. These stories posit that there’s room for everyone at the table, and tabletop is a place where we are only limited by what we can imagine (or rolling a natural one). So, brave adventurer… somewhere, there is a dragon in a dungeon. Who do you want to be? What do you want to do? Whatever you decide, roll for initiative… and happy reading.
