There was a Yatzhee review that mention the story gets slightly more interesting if you imagine the police agent as a time traveler, with all his high-tech gear and paradox sickness

This man is the only reason I have a critical lens for fiction in the first place. I literally can't imagine what it's like being him and having an automated text message as his supervisor.

More than anything, I wanted to avoid tropes of "chosen one" heroes who are magical because "it's in their blood" or whatever prophecized nonsense.
I wanted to write about a community struggling to overcome magical catastrophes, and ultimately landed on viewing it through the lens of one character.
