Mini review time: “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn-Williams

In short: nothing surprising to anyone who’s been hovering in various circles online for a while beyond “wow, absurdly rich people are dumb,” but wow, absurdly rich people are dumb. #carelesspeople #booksky

“Long Shadow,” by Olivia Atwater. Her Regency Faerie Tales are basically my gold standard for romance novels. Every single one makes me grin like an idiot and kick my feet and giggle. This one is no exception. #longshadow #oliviaatwater #booksky

“Babel,” by R.F. Kuang. Put this one off for a while bc I knew it would destroy me and it did. Reminded me of people I loved in very good ways. Made me miss Oxford in good and bad ways. And then hurt me in the best way. #babel #rfkuang #booksky

“Verity Vox and the Curse of Foxfire,” by Don Martin. Just the most delightful little story about a witch in training and her familiar and the Appalachian town where she’s solving a mystery. Perfect for heading into fall. #verityvox #donmartin #booksky

“Apostles of Mercy,” by Lindsay Ellis. Third of the Noumena series, giving me a lot of emotions that are not necessarily positive about one of the characters I used to love deeply. But still so delightfully written. #apostlesofmercy #lindsayellis #booksky

“For Whom the Belle Tolls,” by Jaysea Lynn. I expected just a demon romance and got something remarkably healing and touching and deep. Where did that come from? I can’t even explain this except to say damn. #forwhomthebelletolls #jaysealynn #booksky

“On Writing,” by Stephen King. Sometimes you need to revisit old friends. My copy is held together with dreams and yesterdays. I reread this in about an afternoon and loved it as much as the first time. #onwriting #stephenking #booksky

“Swordheart,” by T. Kingfisher. Tiny review: love this world and series, love a love story where the MCs aren’t Hollywood perfect, love the monsters both human and not. Romances aren’t completely my thing, but this was lovely. #swordheart #tkingfisher #booksky

The world may suck right now, but the #weirdal concert last night was awesome and that helped a lot.

Finally, I finished “Swordheart,” by T. Kingfisher, one of my faves. It’s a romance, so it doesn’t get the usual billion stars I give her, but it was funny, I love her writing, and the set up was absurd and unique. Also it gave my husband and boyfriend DND monster ideas so A+ there. #booksky

Shenanigans happened overseas so I finally dove into my copy of “Persepolis,” by Marjane Satrapi, which I’d been avoiding bc I didn’t need to see a country falling to religious extremism but learning about Iran and her people is paramount these days. Context means something. #booksky

Next came “The Spear Cuts Through Water,” by Simon Jimenez, which is a love story but not a romance. And GOD was it good. I can’t explain it to a single fucking soul but I want to read it again for the first time and feel those feelings again for the first time. Absolutely gorgeous. #booksky

After “Uncultured,” I read “Act Your Age, Eve Brown,” by Talia Hibbert because I needed something light and sweet and it did the trick. Romance is rarely for me, and this was… fine! For a romance! I liked the portrayals of autistic people but again… romance novels 🫠 #booksky

I did want to add that I finished this book in late May (“Uncultured,” by Daniella Mestyanek Young), a memoir about the author’s time growing up in the Children of God cult and then joining the US Army and seeing the parallels between the two. #booksky

Lil book review: “How to Sell a Haunted House,” by Grady Hendrix

Spoilers in the comments! Spoiler free: you know, so many horror situations could be avoided with this ONE SIMPLE TRICK that we poly folk learn real fast. But then we’d have no horror books. #booksky

Lil book review! “The Kingdom of Gods,” by N.K. Jemisin.

Spoilers in the comments! Short version: gorgeously written conclusion to a great series but in my heart I want the 1500 page director’s cut. #booksky

Lil book review time: “Legendborn” by Tracy Deonn

Spoilers in the replies! Spoiler free review: omg this was fun, but it was also SUCH an excellent exploration of so many themes! I’d heard this was good, but it definitely exceeded my expectations! #booksky

Lil book review: “Seven Days in June,” by Tia Williams.

Spoilers below! In short: I loved this so much I want to roll in it like a cat in catnip, and this coming from a not super romance person. #booksky

More lil book reviews: “The Broken Kingdoms” by N.K. Jemisin.

Short review: SO GOOD but oof, my heart is the most broken, also I want to play Godbound with N.K. Jemisin bc based on every series of hers, I’m pretty sure her games are fucking lit.

Spoilers below! #booksky

Lil book review time: “Wicked Ways: An Iron Kingdoms Anthology,” with short stories by several authors.

In brief: rollicking fun in a new-to-me RPG setting though I wish the sound mixing had been better (whee audio books). #booksky
