In think it's similar with vaccines. People forget how awful it is to live when disease is rampant. But after two generations of extremely effective national immunization programs, people think vaccines don't do anything.

Democracy. Messy when you have it. You'll miss it when it's gone.

An hypothesis: My Facebook feed is filled with ads falsely claiming that some celebrity has died. Generalizing, I assume that claims of someone's death are rampant, and are untrue most of the time. Today's algorithms cannot distinguish between rare events and common lies.

Two fronts:
1) Personal. Know which industries are monopolized, buy from another source wherever possible, even if it costs a little more.
2) Political. Advocate for strong competition regulation, *and* to enforce it.
