In think it's similar with vaccines. People forget how awful it is to live when disease is rampant. But after two generations of extremely effective national immunization programs, people think vaccines don't do anything.

An hypothesis: My Facebook feed is filled with ads falsely claiming that some celebrity has died. Generalizing, I assume that claims of someone's death are rampant, and are untrue most of the time. Today's algorithms cannot distinguish between rare events and common lies.

Of course he did it, and his most ardent supporters know that.

A significant source of his support comes from those who want similar impunity for the misdeeds they've committed.

Two fronts:
1) Personal. Know which industries are monopolized, buy from another source wherever possible, even if it costs a little more.
2) Political. Advocate for strong competition regulation, *and* to enforce it.
