Gone Home absolutely does this on purpose. Really early on you see this notice about electricity and how turning on too many lights could cause the system to overload and you to be plunged into pitch black darkness.

This isn’t a mechanic. It’s just trying to spook you.

Small asterisk, and this is even more trivial, but this does happen once in the original Japanese release. A trinity in Traverse Town leads you to a barrel containing an item. This was replaced with a chest in the international release because, clearly, it was confusing people!!
