Making a phone call home required an appointment and was very expensive.
Finding a McDonalds in a European city was a cause for celebration.
I finally saw Star Wars in London, months later. It was awesome.

I was in the Air Force in 1977-79 stationed in Germany. The base store had few SF books, but I picked up one named Star Wars by some unknown author.
I read it quickly and thought it was pretty darn good.
Imagine my surprise a few months later when I discovered they’d made a movie out of it!
