On my way to a #NoKings protest, saw another in Chevy Chase, at the corner of Connecticut Avenue & East West Highway.

3.5 hours later, people were STILL protesting at that intersection.

Astonished at size of #NoKings protest in Bethesda, MD today. Never, never seen a protest there of this size.

People not just on both sides of the streets but packing the median; folks driving by not just constantly honking, but some with signs & flags of their own.

In Pennsylvania's Chester County, canvassing is fueled by critical local delicacies and #GOTV training includes the cutest dog.

Living my best #transit life: met up at DC's Metrobar to take a bus to canvass in Pennsylvania. The bus was the TrainLovers4HarrisWalz bus, of course.

On the other site, member of the Wake County Board of Elections posted update on USPS service in NC, which is horrifying all on its own AND has implications for NC voters.

Life on a rapidly warming planet means everything, including Board of Elections, needs a robust emergency management plan.
Major NC USPS alert. All retail and delivery mail services are suspended in zip codes beginning in 286, 287, 288, 289, and also 39 other listed post offices. Besides the human tragedy, for election officials who could not place 190,000 absentee ballots in the mail until Sept 24 because of an 18-day delay ordered by a vote of the State Supreme Court, this is also a major potential threat to voting, especially since the 2023 legislative session ended the 3-day grace period.

In fact, one time, I was in the Senate, and I was in the middle of a hearing on wildfires, and I get a call that we have to evacuate. Doug was here in D.C., and so I call our son, who at the time was [in his] early twenties. I’m like, “Cole, go to the house. FaceTime me.” Let me just tell you — he’s going to kill me for telling you this — I’m in the hearing, and I’ve got to keep stepping out to go FaceTime with him, and I’m trying to describe what’s valuable and what’s not. And — any parent of a twentysomething or teenager will understand this — he practically was like, “You want me to save this bottle of tequila?” I’m like, “No! The photographs! The things from my grandmother!” [Laughs.]

During her unsuccessful run for U.S. Senate, Porter released a ten-point housing plan, which focused on increasing supply through federal construction and renovation subsidies, incentives to communities to change housing rules, making government land available, fully funding rental vouchers, investing in assistance for new homebuyers, making it easier to build manufactured homes, encouraging land trusts, and cracking down on Wall Street investors. By the end of the race, the whole field was scrambling to put together their own housing platforms. After losing the Senate race, Porter announced she would return to teaching at UC Irvine. But there could be a lot of open positions in a hypothetical Harris administration in 2025, and former employees with experience working in government and managing programs with meaningful impact on a shoestring are hard to come by.

Porter said that she would consider working for Harris again, calling her “an amazing boss. She equipped me with everything I needed to help people. What more can you ask for?” Of the issues where Porter thought she could be most helpful, she cited affordable housing. The way housing problems were “solved” before the financial crisis was with gimmicky no-money-down loans and other tricks that blew up spectacularly. Eliminating those was critical for consumer protection, but the affordability crisis was never really dealt with.

This DPW initiative complements other recent agency enforcement actions, such as: • Rapid Response Teams for high-risk parking violations: In FY22, DPW commissioned a team of Parking Enforcement Officers to respond to safety-sensitive parking violations within one to two hours after a service request is submitted in 311. DPW's Parking Enforcement Management Administration (PEMA) has classified the following 10 parking violations as safety sensitive: Alley Violation, Blocked Driveway, Fire Hydrant, Handicap Parking, No Parking Anytime, No Stop Stand Bike Lane, Parked on or Obstructing Sidewalk, Parked on Public Space, and Private Property Ticket and Tow.
