That looks great, just a few things to make it Roman. Build it as what the design is, two interwoven chain links. Set the five single white tesserae, then the black lines then fill in the colours. They had a set of rules that governed the way the lines were set, (see the image) see next comment.

Consistency would have been the ideal, the execution would, as you've pointed out vary quite considerably at times! I definitely agree that they would have been experienced enough to just set the tesserae without having to think about it. 😀
