A new version of the museum guide to Roman mosaics will be available soon. This guide focuses on laying the stones and what that tells us about the makers. #romanmosaics #romanmosaic #mosaicandamento #mosaicguide #museumguide

If I compressed the last 22 years into one thing it would be these two charts! What Roman mosaicists used is the 'Classical Andamento' one. The Classical Andamento Workbook coming soon will take it further but you can get what you need by applying those methods.

On our last morning on a trip to Paros, I stumbled upon mosaics from a Hellenistic house (2nd c. BCE), tucked away behind the museum. A fascinating transition from pebble to cut stone mosaics, yet barely signposted. How is this not better known? #mosaicmonday

In my opinion, if we were to strip away the usual associations with those mosaics and got down to the way in which they were made then this would be it. This is to do with the making of the mosaic. #romanmosaic #romanmosaics #andamento

Solomon's Knot motif, five points where the strands perfectly curve around the single white centre tesserae. But, these single white Centre Tesserae act almost like 'ghost points' - they're essential to the pattern but don't really exist, like seeing daylight through windows in the design.
