Schumann, Symphonies Nos. 1-4, Concertgebouworkest cond. by Bernard Haitink, 1981-84
-This 2-CD set was released in 1985. It came with those annoying, disintegrating foam sheets inside (which, despite their nostalgic value, I have discarded). #classicalmusic

Handel, Messiah, Philharmonia Orchestra & Chorus etc., cond. by Otto Klemperer, 1964
-In slow motion. The choruses have unsubtle grandeur. On the whole, the Handelian splendour is missing, and now and then the music falls apart. No redeeming qualities. Not good. #classicalmusic

Mahler, Symphony No. 6, Wiener Philharmoniker cond. by Leonard Bernstein, live, 1988
Did Bernstein try too hard to make this interesting and exciting? (i) and (ii) remain long and hollow; (iii) is diluted, softened, weakened by the Bernstein treatment; (iv) is too much for me anyway. #classicalmusic

#NowPlaying Concert of 20 Sept. 1959, recorded in mono, by the Berliner Philharmoniker cond. by Herbert von Karajan:
-Handel: Concerto Grosso Op.6 No.5
-Rolf Liebermann: Capriccio for Soprano, Violin and Orchestra
-Schumann: Symphony No.4
Powerful & lively music-making; fantastic CD. #classicalmusic

I like this one by Kubelik. #classicalmusic

When this sublime recording appeared, the market was already saturated, I suspect. (I remember when Philips discontinued Haitink's Berlin Mahler cycle because of poor sales.)

#NowPlaying The historic hair-raising & breathtaking concert of 28 January 1945, on CD 4 in the 18-CD box set
»Die Wiener Konzerte«, Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker, live, 1944-1954, released 2012
(probably the best transfers from the best sources) #classicalmusic

One of the best recordings of #Mahler4 I have ever heard. I bought it in the late 1990s but did not immediately appreciate its qualities, incl the gorgeous singing.

#NowPlaying Dreadful! By 1963, the days of such cacophonies should have been numbered! Listen to Herreweghe instead!

Brahms, Piano Concerto No.2, Edwin Fischer on piano, with the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler, live radio recording, 1942
Not boring. In good, warm mono sound. I read that all previous releases were hampered by distortion. I detect no obvious distortion here. #classicalmusic

As much as I try, I am unable to like Arrau's way with this concerto very much. I find this recording too slow, just like the one he made with Haitink/Concertgebouw.

Another CD recording of Mahler's masterpiece:
-Mahler, Symphony No. 4, Concertgebouworkest with Margaret Ritchie (soprano) cond. by Eduard van Beinum, 1951
It complements Mengelberg's wonderful 1939 recording, with all the fire & warmth that is so typical of van Beinum's recordings. #classicalmusic

Schubert, Symphony No.8 »Unfinished«, Le Concert des Nations cond. by Jordi Savall, 2021
A fine recording, and, again, Savall's interpretation and accents remind me of Mengelberg. My favorite recordings are slower and seemingly more serious, like the ones by Klemperer and Mravinsky. #classicalmusic

#NowPlaying Another fantastic CD:
Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643), Organ Works & Motets, Lorenzo Ghielmi at the Antegnati organ (c.1620) in Peglio with La Divina Armonia, 2017
-Magisterial organ playing, beautiful singing voices. Frescobaldi was two years older than Heinrich Schütz. #classicalmusic

Mahler, Symphony No. 6, Südwestfunk-Orchester Baden-Baden conducted by Hans Rosbaud, 1961
-A fine orchestra, a brilliant conductor, but (I suspect) a flawed symphony. The andante moderato sounds gorgeous, but even Rosbaud can't convince me that the other movements are great music. #classicalmusic

Mahler, Symphony No. 6, Berliner Philharmoniker cond. by Bernard Haitink, 1989.
-I like the cowbells. The andante moderato is one of Mahler's better movements, I think. As for the rest, incl the hammerblows, I have been trying to form an opinion for decades. Not constantly, though. #classicalmusic
