Update: We deplaned at hour 8. Most of the restaurants are closed but I was able to buy a sad turkey sandwich and half a KitKat with the generous $15 voucher United gave us. No actual departure time. They need to clean the plane, refuel, and they need a new crew.

Update: It has been 7 hours. We taxied back over to an open gate. We have been sitting in front of it (still trapped in the plane) for 30 minutes, as no ground crew has responded to the pilots request to pull us into the gate. No update from United on what happens next. 0/10 do not recommend.

Update: It’s been 6 hours. Still trapped in the exact same place on the runway. No ETA or communication of an actual plan by United management. They knew about the lightning when they pushed us off the gate. Apparently trapping us is worth the profit. How do I report myself kidnapped?

My 4th grade teacher used to read to us, and I still remember all of those books. She’s still one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. Loved snack time with “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” being read from the front of the class.
