This isn't just a possibility, it's reality. Every other social system is based on a similar MO. Be aware that you can't stop fraud. If you find culprits, punish. Trust, but verify.

Dunno, to me that's an identity issue. Someone with you like for whatever reason or someone with similar convictions gets "canceled", it's perceived as a threat to your identity.
The Michael Jackson case is a prime example of this before the term cancel culture existed I think.

Petty crime is almost never resolved. Treating fraud in science like crime won't solve fraud in science. Our field (it sec) tried this approach and got nowhere.
