I'm not sure to be honest - he may have learnt when he was in the Territorial Royal Field Artillery before the war. This is him in camp at Doncaster in 1914, I think just before war broke out.

I love things like this in war diaries. This is the 16th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade for their attack from Shrewsbury Forest on the 20th September 1917. Rifleman Burchell and 2nd/Lt Siebert from the Battalion rest in Godewaersvelde Cemetery.
