I have approximate knowledge of many things acquired during a desperate hunt for dopamine. I do things with thinky rocks.
Maybe it's just nostalgia for the phpBB-style forums of olde.

Do I maintain multiple accounts - one for thoughts on this, another for thoughts on that - or is it wrong-headed to try to subdivide myself like this in the first place? I'm not asking others to subdivide - and indeed I don't want them to.

Moderation facilitates endurance and wards against permanent injury, and I want to be respectful of people exercising that moderation - but how do I do that in this medium?

I keep my politics list separate, for example, because while it feels wrong to Look Away permanently, I also think it's unhealthy to stare unblinking as the Zone is Flooded.

Conversely, I have this urge to facilitate being engaged with in the same way. There are different things I like to think about, but moderation is important.

Maybe I follow everyone I'm interested and get rid of my Following feed altogether? That strikes me as unintuitive but awfully tempting.

The main, undifferentiated feed feels like a ripe space for The Algorithm to pull every which way at my attention and put me in the Skinner Box rather than letting my dwell on things and think about them and engage in a discourse.

(I've been dithering for days, but I had this dark pattern epiphany while watching HGModernism's new video. youtu.be/bNOol5OTasw ) (I'm half-way tempted to learn mobile programming and build an app that implements exactly this process.)

I'm not sure where this impulse comes from, but I think it has something to do with a resistance to The Algorithm, which tends to be a collection of dark patterns. I don't want the endless scroll.

Never the less, I have an urge to catalog - to construct a feed for different interests. (Games, politics, security, etc.) Blue Sky supports this with lists, but lists aren't the same as following someone. On the other hand, following someone means they end up in your main, undifferentiated feed.

(Aside: chunking ideas into 300 characters is a new puzzle for me but it's an interesting exercise in the presentation of ideas. Is this taught in schools yet?)
January 29, 2025 at 8:03 PM
I want to hear about ideas from interesting people in a way that constructs a picture in my head about them. In a lot of content platforms, this leads to a parasocial relationship, but Blue Sky seems to present the opportunity for it to be a (semi-)social relationship instead. That's a nice idea.

(Though, finding stackable blocklists was one of the first things I did - this may be a key factor if your experience is different. I probably need more blocklists still.)

It doesn't look like there's much in the way of information on their site or in their newsletter about what sort of model they're using for their machine learning, though. That's a shame.

I'm not playing it, but now I'm going to, just based on this.

I started over in Book of Hours no less than three times because I realized my note system was Insufficient.

I think it's very clever when a game gets you to inhabit a role instead of just featuring a protagonist with a fictional role.
