A group of reporters and editors at two Kenai Peninsula newspapers are resigning over what they say was the handling of a recent article by their parent company, Carpenter Media Group, after it was criticized by a Republican state lawmaker.

ASD Chief HR Officer Marty Lang told the school board that all 20 teaching positions have been filled from the $2.6M appropriated on Aug. 5 to hire those 20 teachers.

122 vacancies remain, down from 148 at the start of last year.

The board will vote on another $3.5M for 27 more teachers shortly.

The Anchorage School Board passed an $886M budget 6-1 tonight that cuts middle school sports, high school hockey, swimming and gymnastics and the IGNITE program for gifted students.

An amendment that passed details how $71M in additional funding would be spent, in the event of a $1,00 BSA increase.
