Having a marvelous and inspiring workshop on Melchior Lorch in Copenhagen. Being able to handle drawings, prints, and manuscripts while you talk about open problems and questions with a group of experts is magical.

Today I am taking my students to my favorite museum: Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer #KHM. Wearable sculptures recalling the physical presence of absent owners, performing masculinity in commissions that were part of a premodern flex culture. But more importantly, just stunning craftsmanship! #armsandarmor

Today is my favorite teaching day of the semester in The Politics of Representation: Art and its Histories @historicalstudies.bsky.social : critical race art history, critical cataloging, and intersectional approaches. Fortunate to have a wealth of fantastic new scholarship to work from!

It is always a pleasure to open an author copy, though I never read beyond the first sentence for fear of catching the inevitable mistake... 😏

This semester I had the privilege to teach my favorite course: Ottoman Hungary. Last night we celebrated the end of the semester and I am so thankful to be surrounded by such a great group of adventurous students. Köszi! Danke! Teşekkürler!

I laughed out loud at this one: Habsburg resident ambassador to the Ottoman court David Ungnad wrote in 1574 about an animal being paraded around the city which "the Turks think it is a unicorn." ✨🦄✨. Ungnad: Guys... this is clearly a Rhino... 🦏

Gearing up for another full day with @historicalstudies.bsky.social students inside the Weltmuseum / Kunsthistorisches. Habsburgs: collecting the universal and defying gravity since at least the fifteenth century.

This lovely book arrived in the mail today! I have always been shocked by how few people connected William Morris to Islamic arts. This and the exhibition is a much needed corrective. Go see it if you have a chance! The most British thing is rooted in the arts of the Ottomans and Persians. 😍

Mood today: sultana holding a fan in the album amicorum of Hans Joachim Prack von Asch from circa 1587–92. She is not messing around... dagger, sassy hand on her hip, and even breaking the fourth wall with that right foot. 😍

This week in my Ottoman Hungary seminar: preparing to talk #Ottoman #bookhistory and I ran into Ömer Daryā Bey's description of the siege of Esztergom in 1595 and its Ottoman reconquest in 1605. Not surprised to find the Hungarian formal title of the sancakbey of Esztergom on the first folio...😍

Taking my CEU undergrads to Arms and Armor and the Weltmuseum today. Excited to talk about the politics of representation in art history while standing in front of such works. Perfect complement to the paintings in the KHM to disrupt the canon. Is object biography the answer?

Reminds me of this brilliant little guy I ran into the other day in the Kunsthistorisches :) Antikensammlung, IV 4441, c. 600BC

Spending the afternoon admiring Hoogstraten's trompe-l'œil marbled papers at the Rembrandt/Hoogstraten exhibition in the KHM. I think it is clear that the student outdid the master here. 😍😍😍 Living in Vienna certainly has its perks.

#otd November 17th (1588-1610) Anastasius Demler signed the #albumamicorum of Hans Joachim Prack von Asch in Vienna. Prack, a messenger for the Habsburg Ambassador to Constantinople, collected Ottoman decorated papers. Demler was likeky a professor of law from Tübingen (or a son with the same name?)

#OTD in #history November 16, 1575, Johann Huetstockher the younger signed the #albumamicorum of the master of the kitchens in the German House in Constantinople, Sebald Plan. Huetstockher was named as a messenger in Stefan Gerlach's travel narrative #portraitsofempires

Archive Thursdays are my favorite. Someone got a little seal crazy on this letter from the kethüda, beys, and ağas of Ottoman Kanizsa to Ferenc Nádasdy. 1668.09.22, HHStA, Hungarica 311, Konv. C, fol. 59v
