A favorite author of mine and fellow Hungarian just won the nobel prize in literature. László Krasznahorkai! Gratula! His Melancholy of Resistance helped me understand my mother and the world she left behind. Well deserved!

Having a marvelous and inspiring workshop on Melchior Lorch in Copenhagen. Being able to handle drawings, prints, and manuscripts while you talk about open problems and questions with a group of experts is magical.

Painted on stone (and how cool is that?) so that stony sky swirls naturally over triumph of Cupid. Clever work by Hans von Aachen, whose day is today.

Today I am taking my students to my favorite museum: Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer #KHM. Wearable sculptures recalling the physical presence of absent owners, performing masculinity in commissions that were part of a premodern flex culture. But more importantly, just stunning craftsmanship! #armsandarmor

So this is really cool: a stamp impression from the library of the Ilkhanid vizier Rashid al-Din (d. 1318). It reads “pious endowment [waqf] of the Rashidiyya library,” & it may have been inspired by Chinese prints/stamps. Stamped waqf notices are totally unheard of for this time!
