I’m a secret lemonade drinker.

May your bedside table groan under the weight of books you may never read.

In a very particular order: publisher, editor, bass player, dad.
What my dad used to say and what I am saving up for when mine achieve teenagerdom.

Can you link to any studies that addressed optimal stair positioning for items to eventually move to their proper location? Thank you.

Or £17k gives you £163.46 per child, per week for tutoring, which seems like more than enough to top up a good state school education if that’s what you really want.

“A driver might get mad” could be in both columns.

And all Stoppard’s pauses were “borrowed” from Pinter.

I mildly disagree on this one point.

Why not occasionally give a speech showing the intellectual basis of your programme and policies?

Sure, not everyone would engage, but it would show you had a foundation. Just ensure the rest of the time you spoke and wrote plainly so most people can buy in.

“Tyler Lemons” sounds like a character in a Martin Amis novel.

I naively assumed this already happens. After all, it is 2025 and it would seem obvious that changes to roads, temporary or permanent, would be electronically published for years. Silly me.

Ed Straw suggested a 4th branch of government: the “resulture”. Independent of the legislature it ensures every piece of legislation has predicted outcomes, checks them, and has the power to strike down a law that missed its objectives or had unintended consequences.

I’m sure that there are technical and institutional barriers but it would still be good. I can take my mobile number or domain name to another provider. Why not add another layer of numbers that are portable? IIRC mobile numbers weren’t portable once upon a time. Things can change if there is demand

It would be great if bank account numbers and sort codes could be decoupled from banks so you could take it with you when you switched like mobile phone numbers.

That is interesting but I’ve never owned an umbrella.

Turn around from the “park and palace” picture and you’d be facing my old school!

This.

I rewatched First Blood recently expecting the action romp I recalled as a teenager and was surprised by the heart rending tale of a man who gave everything to his country, desperate for connection, who is abandoned & persecuted by society. And only one person dies & it’s not Rambo’s fault.

As well as “schtum” I’ve inherited “schlep” and “nosh” from my dad, who is a Londoner like me and we’re definitely not Jewish.
