You can put a ruler in the frame and then use imageJ to take the measurements. Consistent distance is still useful as it reduces the need to set the scale for every photo.

The photos I sent had the lids on. The LED lights are the trick. 3000k (warm light) worked best.

This works like a champ. I call it the light box of science. Cardboard box + two rechargeable led light bars ($11 + 135% trump tax) and a flat black cloth.
