Labour Member, European, Welsh, comes from Hertford. Plays bowls badly, supports London Welsh and Arsenal. Will largely post about UK and European politics and socio-economic issues and things that amuse him. Will try to never be unpleasant.
Russian minister sacked by Putin found dead

Possibly an offer he could not refuse.

I'm deeply disappointed that Santander has decided to close its Hertford branch from 29 July 2025 - yet another major high street banking leaving our town.

Since ww2 the Americans have fought in Korea (draw), Vietnam (lost), Afghanistan (lost), Cuba (lost), Iraq (won twice) and Grenada (won). I think some random countries might do fairly well against the Russians who have a defeat in Afghanistan and a draw in Ukraine to boast.

Like most Labour members I don’t like the idea of cutting aid but if we are not here we won’t be able to aid anyone.

Seems to me that if the USA turns on its friends, and tries to coerce them into taking actions they think are against their interests they are likely to look for new friends. Decades of diplomatic success will be swept away to the advantage of Russia, China and a range of regional actors.

It seems hard to avoid the conclusion that we can no longer rely on American protection via NATO. So what is plan B?

I feel a big opportunity is being missed to turn Auchwitz into a theme park and resort.

Guns or knives, of course we need to control them but it is more important to rebuild a society where we care for and feel solidarity with one another.

Over the years I have tried not to criticise the actions of foreign democracies. This is because I don’t know enough about them and am not invested enough in them. Criticising their actions seems like criticising their people. Most people hate foriegn interference in their country’s affairs.

This gang of sex abusers preyed on young children in Walsall, and got away with it for years. What could possibly explain the failure by Nigel Farage, Elon Musk and the Tories to call for a public inquiry about it?

The Israeli attacks on Syria are opportunist. They have nothing to do with the pursuit of security or peace. The present Israeli government is behaving like that of a rogue state. Enough is enough!

Hertfordshire local government is to be restructured on the basis of unitary authorities. We have 1.2 m people. Unitary authorities designated since 2006 have had average populations of 380k so 3 or 4 new unitaries perhaps? Could we also have an elected regional mayor and strengthened town councils?

Kemi Badenoch tells Keir Starmer that "we had a Budget in March this year and tractors were not blockading the streets of Whitehall afterwards."

Anyway, here's the 'go slow' protest by farmers that blockaded the streets around Parliament following the Conservative Government's last Budget in March

So explain to us why should farmers have a vastly favourable tax regime compared to
the rest of us ?

We need a complete change of mind set in Europe and we don’t have much time. For us this is the 1930’s again. We face a huge threat to our freedom. We have enormous wealth. Our weakness is our division. We have to strengthen our institutions, tackle appeasement, and dig deep in our pockets.

I have probably missed this in all the budget excitement but where are our offers of help to Spain and condolences from Government and King?

Does anyone have any good spells to summon up demons? I think this is a neglected weapon in our electoral armoury.

We could have a debate about the monarchy but as long as we have one today is what it is for. An expression of solidarity from the nation for the bereaved of Southport and an expression of our thanks to our emergency services. Thank you Charles.
