I think expense is definitely a part of it. But it also seems like most architects aesthetically prefer modernism… to me it seems like they all go to modern art school and are trained to make modern art… someone educate me if I’m wrong!

People would definitely prefer this. And it’s not classism, it’s just modern buildings are ugly.

My (limited) experience biking in midtown’s on the weekends has been relatively chill. Agree it needs major improvements. But I’d say it’s more chill than Oakland. Not too many cars there on weekends.

Also it’s a grid of mostly 2-3 lane one ways streets which helps it feel like a freeway.

Segregated BRT seems like a pretty good candidate for self driving bus- basically a self driving train on tires- atho not fully grade separated.

Communist parties had some electoral success in Europe (and India?). Also there’s a couple elected city council members throughout the US that maybe are communist. Of course there’s Bernie sanders but he’s a social democrat.
Our winner take all single member electoral system is important. But ya…

Places with expensive housing also have lots of small businesses, but I do think Sacramento has some charm that the Bay Area lacks.

They’re also a bit slimmer than a lot of the stuff through Oakland so that helps.
