He’s a good lad. I have no beef with the other Rob Manuel just irritation on myself for not grabbing the name. (Hi Rob)

Oh yeah, I just mean they applied the marketing and branding to a thing that basically worked: kids liked the books and wanted more. Each book helped sell the next book, rather than, I dunno, it's ok, try something else next time.

One of my children found the Walliams books extraordinarily entertaining, there was definitely writing at the heart of it that was speaking to some kids. I do think it wasn't branding and marketing alone, it was answering a need in (some) kids to hear stuff that's a bit naughty.

Probably best for me to not speculate wildly libellously, but it absolutely smells of something where there is more to come and the publisher wants to be out the way when the shit hits the fan, so it doesn't tank the company. Is that libel? I dunno.

Excellent. Look forward to it.

THANK YOU. I missed having the KING OF THE INTERNET ARCHIVES in my Pokemon rolodex.

Oh looks at that. I'm now @robmanuel.b3ta.com - which hopefully will be less confusing to people.

Thanks @tubbycustard.b3ta.com for sorting that out for me.

I love Bill but the less he's tempted into delivering the lead vocal, the more successful is his ability to make hits

My plan is to tackle the entire Tom Baker run, and do is a season at a time, then a break. Like a series of sprints and rests.

As I said higher up the thread. I'm watching old Doctor Who - none of this stuff is for me.

My theory is it's like book charts. You look at them and it'll be some, I don't know, murder based colouring-in crossword at no 1, and you've never heard of it, and it's not really a book in the sense of what you think of as a book. Maybe Avatar is more like a screensaver. Or a gameplay video.

To be a bit well actually I don't think Jim is reading this right. It did incredibly well in the UK, second biggest movie of the year. It's just it did STAGGERINGLY well in some other countries.
December 19, 2025 at 12:13 PM
Yep - went "what the fuck is that?" and it's a big Chinese movie. Which probably explains Avatar really - there are these huge markets with different tastes and we in Britain are priority no 53.

At some level I just have to accept what makes money in films in this era, is stuff at best I think is OK but mostly don't care for.

If you asked me if I wanted to watch any of this tonight I'd be, you know what, I'm quite enjoying working through Season 12 of the original series of Dr Who, thanks.

Yeah, I should do it @tubbycustard.b3ta.com can you make that happen?

The "hard line" that Terence Trent D'Arby was introducing us to was him struggling with the lyrics.

The magic of Doctor Who is that it's been loads of different shows because they made so much of it. There are episodes that feel like Supergran, and there's episodes that are the spookiest folk horror ever committed to 1970s VHS tape.

You can't sum it up, at different times, it's done everything.
