Did someone say Halloween?

Did a little shopping today; Sinners is one of the best films - not just horror but of all genres - of the last 5 years.

Audition is a masterpiece; disturbing and grotesque but incredible.

I haven't seen The Host but have heard very good things.
The DVD of The Host and blu rays of Sinners and Audition.

Finally managed to set aside 3 hours to watch Kinds of Kindness last night; what a strange and interesting film.

I like things very weird, but this was nuts even by my standards.

Incredible performances from Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and of course Willem Dafoe.

Re-reading this one as it's been a few years and I can't help but think, why on earth have they made a film of The Long Walk?

It's an excellent story, but I can only imagine it might just be the most boring film ever made.

Great Romances of the 20th Century by Robert Welbourn. Set in New York City, a British guy who is obsessed with romantic comedy films decides that his pretty coworker is The One, and that he needs to do everything in his power to win her over. Before this book, I'd been in a bit of a reading slump - no book could hold my interest, so I didn't finish any of them. I just wanted to find something GOOD. It only took a few pages of Great Romances, when the protagonist was explaining his chronic loneliness and his propensity for crywanking, that I knew I was locked in. I enjoyed the first person narrative, a stream of consciousness so filled with mundane anxieties and tangents that it sometimes felt like a Peep Show voiceover (this is high praise - I love Peep Show). The protagonist's voice is beautifully, painfully British, which is an interesting counterbalance to the glamorous setting of NYC. Each chapter is loosely linked to a classic romcom (Say Anything, Sliding Doors, 500 Days of Summer, etc) as the protagonist attempts to understand the logic of the characters and apply it to his own love life. Unfortunately, as we all know, films like these aren't always realistic. I don't want to give spoilers, but the story got way darker than I was expecting. I thought that reading this book would feel cosy, like watching a romcom, and for a little while it did. Then it got downright chilling. This was exactly what I needed to break me out of my slump!

What a pleasure to be able to visit the location of Turbine 34 on the day I finish it.

Such a deep, heartfelt tale told in so few words. The threads that are weaved together are wonderful and I loved every word.
