I wonder if anyone can identify the article Graeme mentions?
I remember reading an article (can't remember by whom) shortly after the Brexit vote that made the point that the inheritance litigation and crime tropes of 19th and early 20th century popular literature were revealing of a society in which inheritance was the main hope of many people for having things like a decent place to live and a comfortable old age. The point of the article was that 1. this trope faded away in the later 20th century with more distributed economic growth and the rise of the middle class, with careers providing more people with more opportunity than in previous centuries, 2. we'd already had a few years by 2016 of flatlining income for most people, and with Brexit being likely to damage the UK's prospects of growth, we should expect a resurgence of inheritance-related tropes in books, TV etc at some point in the 2020s!
