I only have casual, tourist-y klingon. Can order pipius claw off menu, think I appreciate the house bloodwine but I don't, inisist on growling my ghs to pronounce it correctly, etc.

So, I am normally loathe to be negative here, but

1) Neverwhere came out in 1996; and
2) I'm not saying I don't own books by him, or even that I did not love them, but you might want to check in on his current status before giving Neil Gaiman an unqualified recommendation.

Also, I worry "also happens" feels condemnatory there, it's not, it's a proper capital-F fantasy book. Wizards, goblins, giant monsters. It's not ashamed of, not arch about, any of those things, it just grounds them seriously in emotion and experience.

Did the thing I really like when fantasy novels do, which is to confine the scope of the action to an intimate experience and then let implication and reader imagination fill in much much more.
