Last for 2025 was Blood of the Old Kings by Sung-il Kim, translated by Anton Hur. In what's becoming another trend, but toddler was screaming so I grabbed the coolest cover from the fantasy section. I loved the magic in this, and it felt like a classic epic fantasy revamped for today. Great book

Next was Hell is a World Without You by Jason Kirk. In what's becoming a trend, I ordered this from a favorite podcaster but didn't read for years. My bad. This book is incredible, and it gives insight into so many kids I grew up with while sucking me back into high school in a good way

Next was The Devils by Joe Abercrombie. He's one of my favorite authors and this doesn't disappoint. A textbook example of writing multiple POVs with unique voices. Within 1 sentence of every chapter, you feel like you're back inside the head of a different character. Plus it's funny as hell

Next was Slaughterhouse V by Kurt Vonnegut. I hadn't read it since HS but it was all I remembered it being. It's a classic for a reason, and something you couldn't get away with writing today if only for the structure of the story. Also reminded me I used to work with a guy who looked like Vonnegut

Next was A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher. I bought this because the kid was screaming and I needed to make a quick decision and I'd heard of her but never read any of her books. Super interesting and I loved the dual POVs

Next was And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. I wanted an example of a mystery where you were in the killer's POV without knowing. Great read. Her prose is tight and sparse. It must have been blasphemous when first published

First was The Verge by Patrick Wyman. I've been listening to his podcasts since The Fall Of Rome and preordered this but never got around to reading. It's so interesting how much the world changed in these 40 years and informed my latest manuscript much more than I expected. Very well written too

Love the site, @fangraphs.com. Pretty sure I was the only person all year to look up Charles Gipson's 2001 stats

My problem has always been that I'm not dedicated enough to look how I want, but I'm so dedicated that if I don't maintain a strict schedule then I hate myself. Anyways, that's why I'm about to run when it feels like this outside
