Sometimes I see the acronym BECMI, for all five sets: Basic, Expert, Companion, Master, Immortal. Which I think of like 5e’s tiers of play.

What’s the distinction between game designers who say B/X and ones who say BECMI? Is it that B/X remains more constrained and grounded?

I first saw the usage Gantlet in Daredevil #175 (1981), the debut arc for Elektra, and teenage me thought it was the wildest mistake.

If I bought Super Mario Bros for the Gameboy back in the day, that's my toy. I hook the cartridge into the machine, load up my game, and can now manipulate the pixels on screen according to the limitations of the object. On its own, without any social intervention, this is a toy. Once I have my toy, I can choose to play a game with it. Due to the function of capitalism and the cultural conflation of game-objects with the games-played, there is exactly one game I'm expected to play when I sit down to play Super Mario Bros.

An excerpt from an article on The Verge by Andrew Webster titled "Nintendo explains why it’s not called Mario Kart 9" There’s a lot more to dig into in the four-part Q&A, including the fact that there will be 200 tracks to listen to and how important food is to the game from a worldbuilding perspective. So you should definitely check out the full thing. My favorite detail, though, is how a character named Cow made it onto the roster of racers. As art director Masaaki Ishikawa explains it “Cow is actually a pivotal character in the Mario Kart series.“ After looking at this concept art, I can’t help but agree: The article ends with a rough sketch of a giant cow driving a blue farming truck, but the steering wheel is in the bed of the pickup truck where the cow is sitting and smiling.
