I'd missed or forgot that they did an HD rerelease of this game and its prequel, and got the original character designer/concept artist, Nakaba Higurashi, to do new key art with the characters from both games together. Love when they get the original people back decades later for this kind of thing.

The pose choice of this one Barosaurus that seems to be rising from a sitting or lying down position was also very interesting to me.

Check out some more ongoing procedural damage adventures I occasionally cook up and add more features to. One detail that I am proud of is that the window emission texture turns red in advance of the hull getting burnt up.

Because the first Star Wars movie has characters calling for pilots to eject before their ships explode, ejection and space suits were much more commonly depicted in older SW media. Here is Luke ejecting from a TIE fighter in 1980.

I love the police car design so much. I also love that Dinohatten has all electric cars, because in this universe where the dinosaurs never went extinct, they don't use fossil fuels. 😉 Images from: www.smbmovie.com/SMBArchive/p...

There's an auction with stuff from various scifi properties that I was skimming through for pics... One of the items is a binder of production photos from the '70s, but they are in a VERY stylish '90s binder with a James Gurney Ceratosaurus painting on it. Forget the contents, I want the binder!

Threw some of the same smart materials on those unfinished legs just to see it looking a little more complete, and possibly complete enough to be used as a promo render for that SC2 mod I contribute to.

A funny story about some designs: they did show me unreleased in-game models, but not any cinematics department stuff, presumably to avoid leaks. So for units like the Archon, I based mine the latest public concept art, and they approved them, despite knowing they were about to release a new design.

Funny story from 10 years ago today- I'd done some StarCraft fanart scale charts, & Blizzard contracted me to make an updated version that appeared in a licensed tie-in book. That year at Blizzcon they printed and displayed them, but they didn't tell me, so I didn't go / didn't find out til later.

Power is out in my building, so the hallways have instantly become fun demo spaces for real time reflections, using lighting to draw the player's attention, etc. #gameart #leveldesign

A Zealot model kit was also prototyped that looked great from the front but also had a very inaccurate back, so it's also possible that Blizzard just only provided Academy/Nucle with the same promo renders that the public had, and left them to fend for themselves for the backs.
November 9, 2025 at 5:08 AM
It's also possible that Blizzard didn't like the way the back of the 3D model looked, so they didn't care if licensees mixed it up. The back of every hydralisk product is very different for example, so I assume it looked unfinished/had nothing connecting the carapace to the back on the real 3D model

The action figure is surprisingly much more accurate than the scale model kit, despite the lower level of polish. Here is the back of that one, with some obvious mistakes. For example you can see in the Amerigo cinematic how high up the opening at the back of the calf armor goes.

I made this lowpoly / low detail interior for some depth and scale. The pilot's head is based on the unit's portrait, the rest is just made up, but I tried to keep the design of the interior still based in 90s scifi sensibilities, leaning more for cassette futurism era than 2000s scifi.

Another StarCraft model I never quite finished (leg modeling was like 60% done, here they are just hidden): the Terran Goliath. For this one I went really faithful, intentionally modeling things to that 90s level of detail even if it was a little goofy in places. I did add a cockpit interior.

I had the whole thing modeled, but some areas like the hands not finalized. There is just barely sufficient reference (also the action figure version is not too far off, though the scale model kit version is, so Blizzard didn't provide them enough). Here were some random helpful refs

I can only imagine that today's Dinosauroid should look something like the Rito in the Legend of Zelda series

While we're on #StarCraft, here is a render of my StarCraft 1-style terran marine model. IMO the SC remaster had a great marine design that nodded to some of the elements of the classic one well, but it still wasn't the classic one, so I'd wanted to go closer. #Blender3d #fanart

I also hope to see it again! Someday I will also make a model of one. Here are two other pieces of Knight's concept art for it- looks like he imagined it smaller than the final 2003 Clone Wars version turned out.

...and then also also, I once rendered out a version of my cinematic-proportioned model at a similar resolution to the original sprite, to also illustrate the differences.
November 7, 2025 at 4:34 PM
I also have made a low poly #starcraft wraith model that is meant to be 1:1 with the sprite versions proportions- very different look! Here textured in a somewhat SC2-based style, but the model is fairly accurate to the original, more so than the one in the official remaster.
November 7, 2025 at 4:31 PM
Here are also some orthographic views. Again, not completely 1:1 with the original, some stuff is intentionally a little modernized or altered to be a middle ground with the sprite version, other stuff is just inaccurate because I didn't put in the time to get it 100% right. But it's pretty good.

Some pics of my now years-old #StarCraft Terran Wraith model. 1st image has the initial blockout, 2nd image compares it with the original (there are many differences, mainly with the sides of the cockpit, it's not 1:1). Modeled in Maya, textured in Substance Painter, rendered in Blender. #fanart

The subject matter of a Protoss Zealot fighting a Zerg Hydralisk was something they would revisited multiple times, from this extremely early concept art to the Legacy of the Void cinematic trailer.
