Many Labour MPs want to increase public spending and the easiest way to do that is frankly, to raise taxes. But the group that actually received tax relief (in significant amounts, too) under the Conservatives are now Labour voters. Much easier to imagine that their coalition is stuck in 1979.

Every manifesto win a majority since the financial crisis has basically relied on going 'at some point in the future, we'll just Remake The Social Contract' for the sums to add up. Our governments are running out of time to actually make a hard choice and not just posture about it.
