Every time I learn about something I would not have guessed we've been doing bad/wrong for decades, the origin is always - ALWAYS! - “some fuckin white guy in the 60s said it one time and an entire industry took it as an immutable truth that never needed to be revisted.”
The theory was first proposed in 1967, when an education professor named Ken Goodman presented a paper at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in New York City.

Just noticed on an old VHS that Robert Patrick was wearing a NIN shirt when he was 3D scanned for the T-1000. That would have been 1990, so he was proudly supporting his brother Richard Patrick, who was in a new band called Nine Inch Nails at the time.

Yes, Russell Mills' art for The Downward Spiral era was transformative for me, but the design choices of Gary Talpas on TDS were just as significant. I wrote about it a bit here: www.patreon.com/posts/89855211
All of which is to say that in terms of "setting the table" for the music, the understated title treatment and minimalist design of The Downward Spiral was every bit as important as the dirt and decay of Russell's textural cover art. Nine Inch Nails circa 1993/1994 was considered (and dismissed as) a "heavy metal" or "hard rock" band to the masses, known for the ear-shredding sounds and violent imagery of Broken, and of course their famously intense concerts. But Nine Inch Nails was always more than that, and The Downward Spiral more than anything before it was a masterpiece album that contained a wide spectrum of emotions. It was not a "heavy metal" album, it was a showcase of how noise and rage and sadness and lust can all be woven together in a complex tapestry where the whispers are as important as the screams. And the album cover's role was to prepare you to experience a work of art. As a kid, I was fascinated by the quietness of that design, how much it stood in contrast to the loudness within and also to the abrasive, "edgy," often garish designs associated with "hard rock" albums. There was no logo, no big in-your-face title, no "cool" photo of the band with their guitars looking tough. No flames, no chain link fences, no jagged grunge fonts, no fisheye lens. It felt less like it belonged in a CD rack and more like it belonged in a museum, the clean tasteful title text invoking a title card next to a piece of fine art on a gallery wall. It very purposefully demanded that you see the music in a different light, that you do not dare to presume this is just a collection of head-bangin' rock tunes. And it certainly must have been confusing for bros who just wanted to hear more of that "fuck you like an animal" song they liked from the radio.

David Fincher's THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and Trent Reznor / Atticus Ross's Oscar-winning score, turned 15 years old this fall. Here's some of my artwork for the album, created by manually corrupting images from the film by editing their raw hex data in a text editor, damaging them from the inside. 1/

The zombie head of Dick Cheney I made as a centerpiece for my 2007 Halloween party is here to remind you that people fuckin HATED that guy for very good reasons, and you do not under any circumstances, in life or in death, gotta hand it to him. More important than ever to say: good fuckin riddance.
It is a prop decomposing Dick Cheney head made from a Cheney mask and a plastic skull, as seen in my LA apartment on Halloween, 2007.

Every October the neighborhood kids (especially my own) ask “where’s the eyeball??” until I put it up. I always think maybe I’ll do something different in that window, but folks love the eyeball, so it’s become a #Halloween tradition.
