I believed in something, and took it to the heart of the industry, and those assembled from that industry voted for it to win the Big Idea Debate at @thestage.co.uk Future of Theatre Conference. It's a big deal. It's only the beginning.

Taken a long while to create boundaries around this, still working on it, and still encountering it regularly. Especially when pitching ideas. That's the craziest part - I share money-making IP then you ask me to discount it because I'm excited about it. Enthusiasm has a cheapening effect.
Ironically as I was scrolling the timeline, came across this related story

“researchers found that ‘people consider it more legitimate to make passionate employees leave family to work on a weekend, work unpaid, and handle unrelated tasks that were not in the job description’” 🙃
'Passion tax': How being enthusiastic about your job can lead to exploitation and what can be done
Would you call yourself a passionate worker? Turns out it might encourage your boss to ask a lot more.

I know he will be inundated with weirdos trying to contact him but, after listening to Michael Sheen on “Front Row” last night, it feels a shame he and @rob-myles.bsky.social aren’t in touch. It sounds like they are trying to address similar issues from parallel perspectives.

Art should be funded like science. To properly fund art, you fund failure. Funding failure will give you occasional excellence. Creating any art with the aim of it being popular enough to make money, will give you consistent mediocrity. Arists need funding to play and fail because that's the process
Let me tell you about the weird business that delivers art into our lives, and the impact it has on the long-term careers of artists. This is a thread prompted by yet another article on authors' incomes, and the inevitable reactions from the 'people-would-pay-if-it-was-worth-it-to-them' brigade. 1/
