Halting medical doctor degree apprenticeships is a sensible decision

Here in the BMJ, I've discussed why this decision was for the best, what the unintended consequences of doctor apprenticeships were, and how best to truly widen participation in medical education!

"Medical doctor apprenticeships would not have delivered on the aim of expanding access into medicine."

Halting doctor apprenticeships is the right decision, writes Rob Tucker of @the-bma.bsky.social

This week @the-bma.bsky.social have once again wrote to the government (DHSC & DoE):
- To understand why +2% in 12yrs is all we have so far #FixOurFunding
- To compare Student Finance England, to the fairer process in Wales with no unliveable drop in funding #StopTheDrop

Lush news:
For the last yr, I've been part of a small team in The BMA raising concerns about these programmes to NHS England, the pilot med schools & more.

Key issue is equity: we estimate the disparity in funding per student to be >£150k. There are better ways to widen access!
Medical apprenticeships are something the BMA has expressed significant concerns about, and we welcome plans to halt these. We will be watching developments very carefully and will continue to fight for improved medical student funding and WP initiatives. www.telegraph.co.uk/money/jobs/l...

Great to join The Medical Schools Council at The House of Lords this week to launch the 10 year review of 'Selecting for Excellence'!

Significant progress has been made to widen access to medicine, but financial barriers still exist for students & med schools to do more.

The Foundation Doctor allocation process is the entry to the NHS for 10,000 doctors each year but it does not ensure the welfare and retention of incoming doctors!

Launched today: Including prioritising UK medical school graduates in allocation.

The Government must put valuing doctors at the heart of its 10 Year Health Plan.

We're calling for commitments to pay restoration, removing pensions disincentives and protecting the role of the doctor.
