Biggest turnout to date in Raleigh for another nationwide protest. The crowds are getting bigger, louder, and younger. Today we're filling up the sidewalks in the heavily gerrymandered NC; it's only a matter of time before we're filling the streets.

"If America hasn't broken your heart, you don't love her enough." - Sen. Cory Booker, voicing the outrage, heartache, and fear felt across the nation in his record breaking speech against this immoral administration from the Senate floor. A clarion call.

See you later alligator. After a while crocodile.

Alligators are smaller, prefer freshwater, and have short, wide snouts while crocodiles live in brackish saltwater and have a distinctive toothy grin. Everglades National Park is the only place where both coexist in the wild.

Gearing up to hike the Trans-Catalina Trail. Any recommendations or advice before I head out? Any trail related logistics questions you want answered that I can look into while I'm there?

Still hoping to stick your head in the sand about what's going on in the White House and its impact on your federally funded services? The National Park Service has you covered!

How many of these can you name?

A delightfully insightful, depressingly useful, linguistics thread. "Secondhand embarrassment" just doesn't come close to capturing the deep discomfort, disgust and resentment needed at the moment.
A German word for being embarrassed by the actions of someone else is Fremdscham, or “foreign shame.” A similar word from Icelandic is aulahrollur, which is quite tricky to translate but basically means something along the lines of “cringe quake” or “douchebag chills”

I recently finished my trip reports from this past summer's 93 mile backpacking trip around Mt Rainier on the Wonderland Trail. It was nearly two weeks of non-stop elevation, wildflowers and mountain bliss.

The application period for the early access permit lottery ends on Monday!

The best #spring flower displays I've ever seen have been off random roads and byways in Texas, seen here outside San Antonio in March. No winter lasts forever. Work to bring beauty to your community.

All but one of the wilderness rangers at Wenatchee River Ranger District have been fired, in addition to the trail crew, mule packer team, and front country staff. This station oversees the extremely popular Alpine Lakes Wilderness and Enchantments Zone.

I prefer the natural monochrome of granite peaks, sand dunes, and mountain ridges shrouded in mist so this week I've chosen the blue waters, blue hills and blue skies of Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, BC 🇨🇦 Why should National Parks have all the fun?

The ʻāhinahina, or silversword, is a rare plant of the aster family endemic to the summit of Halealakā. Silverswords can live upwards of 90 years, and bloom only once in their lifetime, sending up a tall stalk of flowers before dying.

My first backpacking trip was to Grand Staircase Escalante. It was there I discovered the missing piece of myself. To not see another trace of human activity across the horizon is deeply humbling and indescribably grounding. Public lands serve as so much more than non-renewable energy reserves.

A moment of serenity in the Core Enchantments, Alpine Lakes Wilderness. What I wouldn't give to have that feeling again.

“For the first time in my life, I slept out in the open air. During the night it rained a little but not enough to wet us to any extent. Got up early enough in the morning to get our breakfast, and commence photographing as soon as the sun rose.”

Not fun fact: AltNPS began in 2017 after the Trump administration suspended the NPS Twitter account for RTing a photo of inauguration crowds. Now it to spreads awareness of the troubling actions occurring within federal agencies.
