Martyn here, American immigrant in Australia (since 2014). Deep love and curiosity about this beautiful land down under. 10+ years in the higher-ed sector, working to shape Aus as the intellectual and innovation global powerhouse it deserves to be

As the United States cuts science funding and international cooperation, Australia and other countries see a chance to capitalise on the American brain drain.
American science is in crisis. It’s a great opportunity for Australia to snap up top scientists

Almost every day I’m grateful I left the US and became an Australian. The gov isn’t perfect here, but the idea of consumer rights and protection (especially for the vulnerable) hasn’t eroded away like in the US
The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme is a national treasure. It gets the best price from US pharmaceutical corps, protecting us from exorbitant prices that US citizens pay.

Congrats to PM Albanese for consistently defending the PBS from Big Pharma.

Could see this coming - they’re going to ruin the higher ed sector in the US.

Love seeing Melbourne (and Australia) continue to punch above it's weight in global rankings - this time #6 in the world in Oxford Economics Global City Index.

Not bad for a city at the far edge of the world.

Looks like they found a new stick to use against universities - a stick they’ll probably use again and again. Hate seeing international students in the crosshairs.

Fair to say the US a high-risk country to study in.
Trump administration ends Harvard's ability to enrol international students.

Students part way through a degree left in limbo. Threatens university survival.

Dictators always assault universities, critical thinking. Research already censored, depts shut, books banned.

Silence from Congress.
Trump administration ends Harvard's ability to enrol international students
The move escalates the administration's row with America's oldest university over hiring, admissions and teaching practices.

The trial that's gripping all of Australia - I reckon Beef Wellington will pop up on more menus and served at more dinner parties across Melbourne/Victoria given the penchant for dark, slightly offensive humour here

I’ve really immersed myself into Australian native flora since moving here. Some real stunners here, like my beautiful native hibiscus

There’s a real opportunity for Australia here - while Trump threatens international students and compromises research, the brightest minds from around the world will look beyond US for education and research training.

The Trump factor loomed large in the Australia election - "grievance politics" wasn't a winning strategy, thankfully. Some parallels with the Canadian election but a bigger Labor landslide. Voters perceived incumbency = stability, seems the anti-incumbent sentiment is waning during Trump 2.0
Labor routs the Coalition as voters reject Dutton’s undercooked offering
After a campaign overshadowed by Trump, Labor has prevailed and the Liberals have been left with a real problem: who would want to lead them now?

Election day in Australia - first time voting in the federal election since becoming a citizen in 2023. Compulsory voting in Aus, long lines but positive vibes in my community. Democracy in action, democracy sausages in millions of bellies
