Simple: loss of status. In their worldview, “white heterosexual Christian man” is the default setting, the norm. In a multicultural society, the norm is more expansive, and they see that expanse as taking something away from them. Status to them is a zero sum game that they’re losing.

I gotta say, I’m looking forward to Tim Roth’s portrayal of this shitbird in the inevitable film version of the inevitable Michael Lewis book about this administration (and I am using that term unbeLIEVably loosely).

Something I think we all know but nobody ever explicitly states: to these folks, “white” isn’t a race, and “heterosexual male” isn’t a gender identity. “White” and “heterosexual male” are STANDARDS.

Used to be, some folks described themselves as “socially liberal, fiscally conservative.” I always assumed that meant “I want folks to think I don’t like racism, but I’ll vote for any turdburger who’ll lower taxes.” It doesn’t have to be THEIR taxes—they relish tax cuts vicariously.

For what it’s worth, I’m of largely nondescript WASP descent (as James Acaster says, “the worst of all the races”), and I’ve never been a particularly angry person, but the overflowing septic tank that is MAGA makes me so irate that I regularly open beers with my buttcheeks now.
