Admittedly mine was years ago so state of the art is hopefully moved on. I had plastic splints of eye-popping length, which the doc removed with pliers. One was stuck and he ended up with a foot braced on the chair as he yanked. Lots of medicine is basically carpentry.

To hold the septum in place they insert plastic splints and gauze packing, the eventual removal of which is the stuff of nightmares.

Luckily, breathing is worth it.
