One challenge in discussing AI’s impact on science is simply how broad the topic is. “AI” is vast, and so is “science.” Hoping to contribute to a meaningful discussion, I’ve sketched a preliminary taxonomy for the discourse on AI in science.

Is AI opening up a new golden age of science, or is it about to mess it up?
How do we even begin to talk about it? 🧵

I suggest we make some kind of taxonomy first... Below is highly work in progress. (I will try to compile a blog post.) There should be pros and cons in each combination.

He's making AI-as-Death-Star analogy himself. Can't believe it.

Read Wilsdon et al, (2025) "The past, present and future of UK metascience," an annex to the UKRI report ‘A Year in Metascience’.

This is such an up-to-date and rich description of the landscape. Must-read for all #metascience2025 attendees.

And this is the "center of gravity" shift as I perceived it between #metascience2023 and #Metascience2025. Again, this is highly subjective, and of course, completely value-neutral. I just wanted to understand the difference I felt between the two conferences. Both were great.

Inspired (partly) by ‪@jontreadway.bsky.social 's tweet thread, I have come up with a highly subjective and tentative map of different strands in metascience.
It is intended as a starter to begin talking about what people (want to) include in metascience.

What made me believe I can do this in a weekend?

I have been advocating for this Tripolarized view of the AGI-risk conversation lately. Interestingly, of the many academic researchers I followed on X, those who fall in categories 2 and 3 seem to be way more likely to leave X and move to other places like Bluesky than those in group 1.
