Senator you served in the Marines and you take your oath seriously. On Jan 6 you say your training kicked and gave you clarity in a moment of crisis.

What does your training tell you now? Do you have words for our men and women in uniform?

Y’all. Second nest of the season. 3 robin chicks fledged a few weeks ago, but there’s still time for more 🐣

Trump only understands leverage. Our leverage is the more than $400 bn in student loans we’re paying off every month. Keep the education dept around so we can keep paying off our student loans.

I was also thinking of the Jan Brewer scene with Obama

These are not mere hypotheticals; this is US history. Now, Trump has nominated Pete Hegseth a media partisan who is as qualified as Tucker Carlson to lead the department of defense. Think about how 2020 may have played out with Hegseth in charge instead of Esper—13/

Esper was dismissed on Nov 9, long before the Jan 6 insurrection, so we can only speculate about how he may or may not have responded to the attack on the capitol. 12/

clearing a path for Trump, Esper and several other Trump administration officials. Milley and Esper would go on to regret and apologize for their participation in those events. 10/

That same summer, Esper walked alongside Trump to a photo op in front of St. John's Episcopal Church outside the White House; just prior, police in riot gear and mounted police cleared protestors using smoke and flash grenades and a chemical irritant spray from Lafayette Square, 9/

On June 1, 2020, amid widening unrest, Trump demanded the deployment of 10,000 active-duty troops to the streets of Washington and other U.S. cities in a heated meeting with Esper and Milley, who opposed this request. 8/
November 13, 2024 at 3:13 PM
Domestically, public outrage over the May 25 murder of George Floyd sparked civil unrest across the US. Esper, along with General Mark Milley and Attorney General Bill Barr, privately discouraged Trump from invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy military troops to Minneapolis. 7/

His resistance to Trump's desired rapid withdrawal reportedly contributed to his dismissal as Secretary of Defense on November 9, 2020, after which Trump ordered a reduction to 2,500 troops on November 17. 6/
November 13, 2024 at 3:13 PM
Conditions would not be met. Tensions between Trump and Esper arose when President Trump pushed for an accelerated withdrawal before the November 2020 election, despite the Taliban's noncompliance with the agreement. 4/

In light of Trump tapping a Fox News personality for Secretary of Defense, I wanted to do a thread on Mark Esper, Trump's final Secretary of Defense during his first term -- who he fired by tweet on Nov 9, just a few days after the 2020 election. 1/
