Talking of Native screen content, just saw this... and OMG, make it:

Up in Kitsumkalum today with their nation’s land Guardians, to interview them about their work/shadow them for the day. Also, crossed over into Nisga’a territory to check out their lava beds.

Amazon’s top ten books on First Nations includes 2 residential school denialist books, and 1 book by Thomas King.

For the record, here are my US and Canadian Status cards, and a federal court filing where the chief is suing me and confirms I’m a band member (she hates) numerous times. If you’re actually Native it isn’t that hard. You don’t need introspection, you just need an organized wallet.

This is why I'm still here.

Just saw salmon spawning in this little restored creek behind BCIT - between the Brentwood and Metrotown skylines…

I got a bunch of likes on this old post recently talking about this amazing Canadian artist - Ellen Jewett - apparently she had an auction the other day. Sooo sad I missed it. Her work is #goals to acquire. www.ellenjewettsculpture.com/sculptures

"Wanted: Your Failures" - this is a neat project.

1. never heard of these before. 2. Weird to name a fruit after an ethnicity. 3. Funny to name an *apple* after an Indigenous group. ouch. 4. Of course I bought some.

Any ideas what's going on here? (2 of 2)

Also seen at the park - is this wild kingdom stuff or very depressing stuff? Is this the seals playing over their catch... or is that their baby who died and they don't know what to do with it? (1 of 2)

Remembrance Day at Stanley Park here in Vancouver (there’s a military base in the park - if you’ve never been).

I saw non-Natives online complaining about how 'divisive' it is to have a separate day for Indigenous veterans. As-if it's the 'day' that's divisive... not the 70-80 years of discrimination against Native vets. 2
November 9, 2025 at 12:45 AM
If you're not sure why we need Indigenous Veterans Day as a stand alone day - dig through the old newspaper archives and search for "Indian Veterans". Almost every single story is like these ones, discrimination on top of bureaucratic hell. 1

A strange big poof of smoke at the Port of Vancouver - anyone know what it is?

I was reminded of this old article featuring a quote from Chretien talking about land claims and money...

And there's the same freeze in Indigenous services. So a 10% cut once you factor in population growth.
November 5, 2025 at 12:01 AM
Pre-Trudeau, First Nations communities suffered under a 2% annual funding increase cap. That cap didn't keep pace with population growth. Under Carney's Liberals, it's not just a 2% increase cap - it's a ZERO percent cap, a freeze. Literally worse than Harper. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
November 4, 2025 at 11:59 PM
Look at this, every year infrastructure spending for non-Native communities goes up, and at the same time spending for First Nations infrastructure goes down.
November 4, 2025 at 11:56 PM
budget.canada.ca/2025/report-... While there are a couple hundred mentions of Indigenous people, it's all genuflection - little substantial. Look past this fiscal year, and it's all zeroes... where do they think we're going?
