Even from a utilitarian view where punishment is used as deterrence, we know positive prevention structures run miles around deterrence as a means of preventing harm.

When hip hop flaunts confidence, power, wealth, influence, it's saying "I overcame the struggle. The system couldn't hold me down."

Take those lyrics out of that context and give it to someone who didn't have that struggle, and the connotation swings from "I beat the system" to "The system won".

I think everyone's kinda hit the nail on the head here. Hip hop is art about dealing with and overcoming struggle. Guns are about toughness and survival. Bragging rights show you earned respect, something so often denied to young Black people. You show off your riches because you came from nothing.
