Does it have to pass the Senate? I thought this was a exercise of House oversight power, which doesn't require Senate approval.

Dems raised the profile of ACA subsidies and placed the blame squarely on Republicans. Then they won an off year election by huge margins. That's not nothing.
November 11, 2025 at 5:43 PM
You can disagree with me on the odds Dems could extract significant concessions from Republicans. If you believe that your calculation of risk versus reward makes the shutdown worth it. But my calculation of potential reward is nil, so the risk of pain for feds and SNAP recipients is overwhelming.
November 11, 2025 at 5:08 PM
So you think Republicans would pass those subsidies through the House and Senate and Trump would sign them into law? I can't imagine that actually happening. If I could, then I'd urge Dems to keep the shutdown going. But inflicting pain with no hope of pay-off is just cruel.
November 11, 2025 at 5:02 PM
They shut the government down for 40 days. It was the longest shutdown in history, and Trump cut off SNAP as his response. What could they win? All they could do was drag out the misery. They cannot become the majority by filibustering.

The entire point of taking the vote is to show that Republicans don't care about healthcare. That's the point of her last sentence.

You and she agree that Republicans are no longer sensitive to political pressure. So why do you think extending the shutdown will produce anything meaningful?
November 11, 2025 at 2:41 PM
What does "letting it happen" mean when Dems simply don't have the votes to do anything? They can't make Republicans not destroy things. Is that really impossible for people to understand?

Being pissed is fine. It’s good. Saying that Democrats are the ones who took health care subsidies away is a vicious fucking lie that is meant to demotivate people, to republicans’ benefit, and you know it.

Elected officials have power because voters give it to them. Voters decided to put Dems in the minority and to elect Trump. That's democracy. Demanding that Dems somehow overturn the will of the voters is both unrealistic and antidemocratic.

Makes sense. Thank you.

Agree with your larger point, but wanted to ask, do you consider "The Palestinian people's connection with its homeland is real and valid" to be incompatible with Zionism? Certainly with Kahanism, but with all Zionism?
November 10, 2025 at 9:00 PM
The CR hasn't actually passed yet. It needs to go through procedural hoops in the Senate, then get passed in the House, then get signed by Trump.
November 10, 2025 at 8:03 PM
I'm ambivalent about whether now is the right time for Dems to cave. Can you tell me what you realistically think continuing the shutdown could accomplish, and when Dems should throw in the towel if they don't get it?

I'm so sorry for your loss. May her memory be for a blessing.
November 10, 2025 at 6:59 PM
Reversing the Snap in this analogy would mean reversing the 2024 election. Hasn't happened. Dems are still in the minority, Trump is still president, and nothing material has changed to give Dems the power to force Republicans to pass a law protecting ACA subsidies.
November 10, 2025 at 6:11 PM
The GOP is worried about pissing off Trump. They're already pissing off/harming their own base. The GOP is a nihilist party captured by a demented narcissist. Dems are attempting harm reduction with no levers of power.

Thank you.

Also "process" - why is this only noticeable after I post!
November 10, 2025 at 3:47 PM
Ugh, "there"
November 10, 2025 at 3:46 PM
Part of the strategy seems to have been to use the shutdown to boost Dem's electoral chances, and it worked. If that was what we got out of the shutdown, ending the pain now seems potentially reasonable.

Collapsed FDA, collapsed HHS...the federal government does a lot that we don't notice. We'll notice when it stops. People can only work with no pay for so long. Even if the government has the cash to pay SNAP and social security, what happens when their are no employees to proceed the payments?
