There was literally a death sentence for being gay in the Royal Navy at the time, so if he wasn't straight, it is unsurprising if he remained closeted.

Note that the first 2 lines of the apology from the store are in quotes, the 3rd line is a third person, not quoted - possible either fabricated or misquoted to conceal the true framing.

This was my response to the original announcement:
Good luck to them - the IOC has spent literally a century trying to define "Biological women" & failing, repeatedly - because their is no such thing. There is a continuum of characteristics, "Man", "Male", "Women", "Female" are social constructs, buckets we put people in (Along with "Intersex" & "Transgender") because they mostly do or don't match an arbitrary laundry list of features. Everybody thinks they know what a "Fish" is, but they don't exist in terms of biology. Essentially the same applies to "Male" & "Female". The closest term in Biology is "Phenotype" - the combination of "Sex Characteristics" a person currently displays / possesses - which are a product of hormones, so many of them change with changing the hormone profile. Humans can "Change Sex" naturally - people with 5-alpha reductase deficiency can present as female at birth but go through a limited male puberty without medical intervention. Biology is analog AF & no amount of legislation can change that, only harm those who don't fit into neat boxes.

Not just trans people, an attack on trans women is an attack on *all* women, from the article:
The context for this assertion that the court can know better than the legislature what's good for it is a sequence of paragraphs considering the UK legislative idea of 'living as a woman'. Paragraphs 87-93 go on an extended riff on the concept of 'passing', of living and dressing a certain way as evidence that you are living as a woman. This, of course, means that women could also be assessed against their adherence to this model of gender-approved behaviour. If there is a legal standard to live as a woman (which the court implicitly suggests ought to exist beyond having official documents showing you are a woman) it follows that all women are now subject to having their lives assessed against this standard.
